Removable Number Plate for Honeycomb Grilles: The Clean Fix for Audi S & RS, Golf GTI and Golf R

Removable Number Plate for Honeycomb Grilles: The Clean Fix for Audi S & RS, Golf GTI and Golf R

The honeycomb grille problem

A honeycomb grille is one of the best-looking parts of a performance car. It is also the worst place to bolt a number plate.

Screws and cable ties go straight through the mesh. Once they are in, the grille is marked for good. Standard magnetic kits don't help either, because there is no flat bumper surface behind the plate to stick to.

That is why we built the Plateless Honeycomb Grille Kit: a removable number plate mount made for honeycomb grilles. Your plate comes off in seconds for a show or a shoot, and goes back on before you drive home. No drilling, no holes, and no permanent changes to your grille.

How the Honeycomb Grille Kit works

The kit is two holders. Each one sticks to the back of your number plate with extra-strong double-sided tape, then locates into the cells of your honeycomb grille.

To take the plate off, unclip it. To put it back, line the holders up with the grille and clip it in. The holders stay on the plate, so nothing is left behind on the car.

What's in the box:

  • 2 × Honeycomb Grille Plate Holders, with adhesive backing

The kit is front only. Your number plate is not included.

Which cars does it fit?

The kit is designed for cars whose front plate sits on a honeycomb-style grille. Audi's S and RS models (anything from the S1 up to the RS5, for example) and the VW Golf GTI and Golf R range are the classic examples, and plenty of other performance cars use the same mesh design.

A quick check before you order:

  • Your front plate mounts on the grille itself, not on a solid bumper section
  • The grille has open honeycomb cells the holders can locate into

If your front plate sits on a plastic bumper, you want our Standard Bumper Kit instead. Driving a G87 M2? There is a dedicated kit shaped for that bumper. Not sure? Message us a photo of your grille and we will tell you which kit fits.

How to fit it

Fitting takes a few minutes and needs no tools.

  1. Take off your old plate and any fixings.
  2. Clean the back of the plate and let it dry fully. The tape bonds best to a clean, dry surface.
  3. Hold the plate against the grille and mark where the holders line up with the honeycomb cells.
  4. Peel the backing and press each holder firmly onto the back of the plate at your marks.
  5. Leave the tape to bond before you drive, then clip the plate into the grille.

When to take your plate off (and when not to)

In the UK, your front plate must be fitted whenever you drive on a public road. It also needs to be a road-legal plate that meets BS AU 145e. The kit doesn't change that: it just makes the plate quick to remove when you are off the road.

Owners use it for:

  • Car shows: park up, unclip the plate and show the grille as it was designed
  • Photo and video shoots: clean front shots with no editing afterwards
  • Track days: take the plate off in the paddock and refit it for the drive home
  • Show plates: swap between your road plate and a show plate in seconds

FAQs

Will it damage my honeycomb grille? No. Nothing is drilled, screwed or glued to the grille. The holders stick to your plate and locate into the grille's existing cells.

Is the Honeycomb Grille Kit magnetic? No. A honeycomb grille has no flat surface for magnets, so this kit uses holders that locate into the mesh instead.

Does it fit the rear plate? No, it is front only. For the rear, choose our Plastic Rear Kit or Steel Tailgate Kit, depending on where your plate is mounted.

Can I use a different adhesive? Yes. The kit comes with extra-strong double-sided tape, but you can use another adhesive if you prefer.

Is the number plate included? No. The kit is the mounting holders only.
