Will magnetic plates leave marks or damage my paintwork?
Plateless magnetic number plate kits are fitted with foam-backed pads that sit between the magnetic kit and your vehicle's surface. When mounted on a clean, smooth surface these pads cushion the contact area and help prevent surface marks. To protect your vehicle:
- Always clean and dry the bumper or tailgate surface before fitting.
- Remove the plates and clean the pads regularly — dirt or grit trapped under a pad is the most common cause of surface marks.
- Never fit plates over loose, flaking, or recently painted surfaces.
We do not make a universal promise that our plates are safe on every paint type or condition, so if your vehicle has a delicate or custom finish, test in a small area first.
Can magnets detach while the vehicle is moving?
Our plates are designed to provide a secure hold during normal use. That being said we have throughly tested our kits on different terrain from the harsh Nurburgring to the bumpy British B roads. The strength of the magnetic hold depends on choosing the correct kit for your vehicle:
- Plastic bumpers – use the Plastic Bumper Magnetic Number Plate Kit, which is engineered for non-ferrous (plastic) surfaces.
- Steel tailgates – use the Steel Tailgate Magnetic Number Plate Kit, which takes advantage of the vehicle's steel surface for a stronger hold.

How do I clean the foam-backed pads?
Regular pad care keeps the magnetic hold strong and the mounting surface protected:
- Remove the plates and wipe the foam pads with a clean, damp cloth to remove dust, road grime, and debris.
- Allow the pads to dry fully before refitting.
- Inspect pads periodically for signs of wear or contamination and replace them if damaged.
How do I remove the plates safely?
To remove without marking the vehicle surface:
- Pull the number plate towards you and straight off the vehicle — this breaks the magnetic contact gradually and reduces the risk of dragging grit across the paint.
- Ensure the mounting surface is free of debris before refitting.
